I want to counter this. John Luther Adams lived in Alaska until 2014. His Pulitzer-winning work Become Ocean made its debut in 2013. The first time Adams visited Carnegie Hall in his entire life was for a performance of that work in front of an enthusiastic capacity audience. When critic Alex Ross wrote his influential piece on JLA, several years earlier, Ross had to travel to Alaska to do it. So the facts simply don't support the view that Adams aggressively networked in New York to gain recognition.
