Great to see you sharing a video Ted. I hope you make more. Your writing is excellent but I also enjoy hearing you speak. Watching your 1st talk with Rick Beato was my introduction to you. I bet that got you a ton of subscribers!

Dittos to those all the above – including first time seeing you on Rick Beato's YT video! Immediately became a subscriber thereafter!

You are an incredible writer; I'd read articles about the mating habits of caterpillars if you wrote them!

(I bought several of your books on jazz, including How To Listen To Jazz. Utterly fascinating and fantastic!!

I, too, came to Ted's Substack via his Rick Beato appearance. I immediately subscribed and vigorously absorb his offerings. This

VIDEO post reminded me how well Ted presents in this medium and how clearly he expresses his thoughts to camera.

Great video. I’m wondering if you think that the “social engineering “ element of society I hesitate to use the word Woke) contributes to this issue or is just facilitated by this issue? I know there are new ventures like Angel Studios is now making films for an audience that feels very underserved by the current major studios. Certain stories/themes etc that don’t get access to the major players.

If I write a novel and self-publish it selling it from my own website, have I created a vertically integrated creation and distribution monopoly? How about if I sell using Amazon KDP? Is there a fundamental difference between what I would be doing and what the streamers are doing other than they are very large and I, very small?

I’m certainly no expert in American law, but isn’t a distinguishing factor that in the case of movie theatres, if you create a monopoly, you restrict access, because the number of theatres is limited, expensive to build, and people are only willing and able to travel so far to go see a movie? But in the world of streaming, it is much easier to start a competing service and this can be accessed from anywhere around the world. So there must be room for a platform that only shows films and documentaries from independent film makers.

The same restraint at of trade situation exists in the UK with pubs - only about half are considered “independent”. The others are either owned by breweries, or by pub companies that have agreements with breweries to feature their products.

Thanks for that insight. Really interesting stuff, Ted. You’re the man.

And I dig that you’re rockin’ that stand-alone mustache. It’s a look that’s coming back!

Thank you Ted. I agree and have sensed this issue of restraint of creativity for some time. Please know that Netflix and its investors are going to put you on their "naughty" list.

Another appreciative reader here courtesy of Rick Beato.

I’m wondering how the issues raised in this post bear on healthcare, and on the efficacy, legality, and morality of vertical integration of enterprise in general. What are the particular situational variables that make vertical integration a good thing or a bad thing? One previous comment asked whether an independent artist selling their own product is a violation of anti-trust law. I’m guessing and hoping not.

So, is it more a question of scale; how much of a given market is controlled by a single enterprise, or by a few enterprises? And how many is a few?

Healthcare and healthcare insurance is undergoing a horizontal and vertical consolidation which smacks of excessive market control. But on some level, vertical integration of these services has proven itself to be capable of effective delivery of both care and cost-sharing via insurance.

So, is the culprit vertical integration, or is it something else - like the scale of market control? And how best to measure scale of market control and concentration of that control in any given situation?

Fodder for your upcoming work on the subject?

Ted, I was waiting for you to tie in the CIAs involvement in Hollywood.

"Although the only OSS-specific film Ford directed was the OSS training film How to Operate Behind Enemy Lines (1943), Ford’s contributions to the war effort using his incredible talent as a director and filmmaker demonstrate how anyone can aid in the security of a nation."
