Even today in so-called post-modern times, beauty is ever a protest. Against ugliness of heart and spirit. Against cruelty that runs amok because it has power. Against all that is petty, mean, and vile. I search for beauty all the time and try to convey it in my fiction. But without ugliness, how would we know the difference?
