So, maybe "read" is just archaic Oxford slang for "study"?
I get that Oxford is idiosyncratic...but how did they let a nincompoop like Boris Johnson out into the world? Good at "Oxford," but bad at "Downing Street"? Smooth talking is overrated. Used car salesmen can do that, without any degree at all.
I used to be a proctor for people taking exams to do engineering work, and I am all on board with preventing cheating. But we let them use calculators. They will have to at work.
