In a new free-wheeling video interview, I speak frankly about the current music scene and critique leading trends and institutions

Let me welcome the new subscribers who have signed up in the last few days. We are starting to evolve into a genuine community, which is promising.

I’m considering ways to make this platform more interactive in 2022. I’m blessed with some very smart and knowledgeable subscribers—so, for example, I envision the comment section evolving into a key part of the reader experience. And there are other ways we can enhance the give-and-take.

To help things along, I plan to share some stimulating and perhaps surprising posts in the weeks and months ahead. By the way, the second installment of my “100 Best Recordings of 2021” will go out to paid subscribers later this week. But I also have other end-of-year features on the way.

I recently participated in this free-wheeling video conversation hosted by the Salastina Music Society, and conducted by co-directors Maia Jasper White and Kevin Kumar. This is one of most informal online events I’ve done, and we dealt with all sorts of subjects in a frank and uninhibited way. This is pretty much what a private conversation with me, over drinks and dinner, sounds like.

I tell stories, predict the future, and even play some favorite music videos. Finally I take questions from the online audience, and explain what I would do if I ran a major record label (a scary thought).
