You mentioned Johnny Green's "Out of Nowhere" and its harmonic similarity to the Star Trek Theme. An even more interesting contrafact might be Tadd Dameron & Fats Navarro's "Casbah," with its bongos and female scat-singing.

Hey, Su! Fellow New Yorker. And became a jazz fan through WRVR back in the day. I went to Columbia in the '70s and lived a hop, skip, and a jump from Riverside Church. I met Les Davis and Rob Crocker through Phil Schaap. Fond memories!
WBGO in the '80s was a great resource for me. Bob Porter, Michael Bourne, Gary Walker, Dorthaan Kirk played the best music on radio. Phil I always loved but he spent a lot of time reading the credits down to the nightshift janitor for the studio instead of playing tracks. LOL.

I had forgotten about that tune!

WRVR was my favorite station. When it went to the great beyond I switched to WKCR and WNYC.

Wow, yes indeed.
