The platform can be a dumpster fire—unless you know where to look
YouTube is often a dumpster fire—cluttered with unboxing videos, adolescent influencers, Minecraft play-alongs, and podcasts delivered by mumbling commuters in their moving cars. I sometimes wonder whether the viewers, like demented NASCAR spectators, aren’t just waiting for a crash.
But that swill is for everybody else. Here at The Honest Broker, we treat YouTube like a wine connoisseur’s cellar, stocked with rare vintages. You just need to go a little underground sometimes to find them.
I’m encountering good stuff on the platform on a regular basis. And if I miss something special, a friend or reader is sure to point me in the right direction.

Elad Sobol, who is a subscriber to The Honest Broker, transcribed every syllable in an Ella Fitzgerald scat solo—and then identified each melodic reference to another song. Watching this is both an education and an absolute delight.

I’m eagerly awaiting Brad Mehldau’s album of Beatles songs—which comes out on Friday. It’s aptly titled Your Mother Should Know.
So far he has released his solo piano version of “I Am the Walrus.” It kept me singing “goo goo g'joob” all day long—perhaps to the dismay of my family.
